PFLAG Charleston partners with the College of Charleston’s Special Collections for the screening of the documentary Dawn: A Charleston Legend.
PFLAG is screening the documentary Dawn: A Charleston Legend on 8/29 at 2 pm at the Mount Pleasant Library. We’re partnering with the College of Charleston’s Special Collections, which will bring out archival materials and displays to explore the broader history of Charleston’s queer community.
The documentary is about Dawn Langley Simmons, a writer, biographer, and transgender woman who lived in Charleston in the 1960s. After undergoing gender-affirming surgery in 1968, she married John-Paul Simmons, recorded as the first interracial marriage in Charleston. Dawn lived a remarkable life, and her story offers a surprising window into Charleston's queer past.
Local nonprofits will also be tabling at the event.
